Description

High School Students:

The 2024 Hillman Academy (formerly the UPCI Academy) is a 7-week summer program that connects students with a University of Pittsburgh faculty, staff, or trainee mentor to perform authentic research in a biomedical or computational domain. For most of the summer, students will work on a research project either in a lab, or office. Throughout the application process, you will prioritize the eight research focuses/sites offered by the Hillman Academy. The CoSBBI site provides opportunities for fully in-person, hybrid, and fully remote research experiences. The remaining seven sites are exclusively in-person. Please note that we do not offer housing, so if you are unable to commute to campus daily (Monday through Friday), consider selecting the CoSBBI site as your top choice. Students will learn research techniques and conduct their own research that will be presented at the end of the program. There will also be didactic sessions, as well as academic and career prep workshops. Applicants must be at least 15 (dry lab) or 16 (wet lab) years of age by the start of the program and were enrolled in high school during the 2023-2024 school year.

In accordance with our federal and foundation financial support, we will select a minimum of 34 students from groups that are underrepresented in the biomedical sciences as defined by the NIH. These students will be compensated to work with us this summer.

To qualify for compensation, you must meet at least one of the following criteria. Full criteria described here.

- Your race/ethnicity is considered underrepresented by the NIH.

- You qualify for federal free or reduced lunch or meet socioeconomic requirements.

- You have a disability recognized under the American Disabilities Act.

- You are a first generation college student.
